What is Twitter?

It’s a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows you to send and read other users’ updates or Tweets in 140 characters or less.

I use Twitter for socializing, business networking, generating leads and keeping up with leaders in the network marking industry.

Even the huge company I work for is using with great success. There are a ton of tools available for every Twitter need imaginable. I’m still waiting for the one that gets dinner started every night.

Many businesses are using Twitter to interact with their customers about product offerings, sales, special offers and more.

It has taken me a long time to get to the place where I can admit that I don’t know something.

For me, I think this may have started when I decided to enter the world of internet marketing. As I recall the messages from my beginnings in network marketing I hear “the money is in your list”, “brand yourself” “fake it until you make it” and a whole bunch of other stuff. Mind you, there is a lot of validity in all of that but what if you don’t know what a list is or how to build one? What would happen if you admitted that you just don’t know something?

You could endure the extreme embarrassment of raising your hand during q&a on the weekly conference call when it appears that everyone else on the call has a complete grasp of what is being presented, or you could call or email your up line who is busy showing the newbies the ins and outs of the business but you really don’t want to because you have heard that most of their time is devoted to developing the new people and since you have been doing this for ‘x’ number of months or years, by now you should know this. If those options will not work for you, there’s always the option of trying to figure it out on your own.

As a former corporate trainer, I am certainly an advocate of being a self-starter, a person who is not waiting to be spoon-fed, but what if I seemingly have exhausted all of my options and I still don’t get it?

You could continue faking and hoping that you’ll eventually make it or you can ‘man up’ and admit that you don’t know. It took me years to get to that place. You see, for me it’s not easy to create a bio on let’s say a social marketing site and have the look of an experienced person (over 50) without having the experience to back it up.

Lots of times I get comments from people viewing my profile that will start out by saying, ‘you probably already know this’, or ‘you would know because….’ On the surface that could be flattering but here’s the bottom line: there’s a lot that I don’t know.

I’m self ID-ing as a newbie ok?

I finally came to the realization after joining program after program, spending lots of money on programs, books, cds, upgrades and getting absolutely nowhere, that before I can achieve any measure of success, I have to first take the time to become a student of the business.

So what if people think I should know something that I don’t?

I’m enrolled in a training program that is teaching me the stuff I longed to know in my so-called 10 years in network marketing. It’s hard taking baby steps with ‘all of my experience’, but by getting out of my own way, now I am going where I want to go.

Just remember these Tips when you are on Twitter sending tweets.

* Don’t spam with two many tweets with your website URL.
* Don’t send the same tweet back to back.
* Create a dialogue with fellow tweeters.
* Don’t try to sell in your tweet or DM (direct message), simply provide quality content.
* Compliment people in your tweets.
* Use popular quotes when sending tweets.
* Retweet other tweets & others will do the same for you.
