Yesterday reluctantly, I bought a smaller purse. I’ve done this before and ended up taking them back after a day or so. Hopefully, this time will be different.
I cut off the tags of the new purse and filled it with my company id, my wallet, cell phone, car keys/house keys and 1 hand sanitizer.
To help convince myself that I really need to make the switch, I decided to inventory all of the ‘other’ items that were in my purse that I now need to figure out what to do with them and here it is:
3-Jet Magazines
1-Body Magic Catalog
1-Atkins Carbohydrate Carb Counter (I’m not on Atkins)
1-Weight Watchers Eat Wisely Booklets (I’m not on WW, either)
1-Electronic Yahtzee Game (never used it because the battery never worked)
1-antibacterial hand sanitizer they gave us at the Qwest store that has cute little hook on it
1-antibacterial hand gel that I bought from someone in my office who sells Avon
1-clamp for my hair (looks like a claw) in case I decide to wear my hair up for the day
1-large barrette in case I decide to wear my hair pulled back for the day
1-scrunchie in case I suddenly want to wear a ponytail
1-MAC Studio Fix (pressed powder compact in case I decide to go out after work, yeah right)
1-retractable brush to apply Studio Fix
1-Tube of Aquaphor in case my cracked heels need some serious moisturizing
1-small antibacterial hand gel that they gave me when I bought something @ Bath & Body Works
1-IPOD touch
2-Pens because Michael always seems to need a pen at church during offering time.
1-bulletin from last Sunday’s church service
1-large emory board in case I need to file down my nails
1-button (I’m gonna sew it back on my jacket when I get a minute)
1-button that came off my other jacket that I will sew on really soon.
1-nail polish (a dark color)
1-nail polish (a light color)
5-tubes of lipstick/lip gloss
2-concealers (so I can show them which one I’m looking for when I go to Walgreens)
2-broken pairs of reading glasses (in case I leave my good reading glasses at home)
2-empty eyeglass cases
1-lighter (not sure how or why I have this since I have never been a smoker)
1-roll of film that needs to be developed (who knows how old this is since everybody uses digital cameras)
3-items I bought at Michael’s to repair my earrings
1-pkg of earring backs
1-pkg of ear wires
1-straw (I have really sensitive teeth and sometimes there isn’t one available)
1-small notebook in case I have to write something down
2-new credit cards to replace the expired ones (I need to call to activate them)
Now all I have to do is figure out where I’m going to put all of the stuff I just pulled out of my purse?
I hope this doesn’t make me miss work for the rest of the week.

About 4 years ago a friend of mine invited me to go with her to an open house at a mortage company owned by someone she knew. I was reluctant at first because I didn’t know diddly about the mortgage industry however, I was somewhat intrigued by the prospect of being able to earn some extra money. I finally caved in and went with her to the meeting. Much to my suprise, the owner turned out to be someone I also knew. We listened intently to the presentation. Mmm, ok, I know her, I can trust her. By the end of the day my friend and I decided to become mortgage brokers. Less than a year later, the mortgage company owner and I decided to go to real estate school at 3 nights a week. The friend who invited me to the mortgage company open house had already decided that doing mortgages was not her thing and had dropped out.
I often thought to myself as I sat through 3 months of evening classes, worn out from my stressful ‘day job’ in telecommunications, what in the world are you doing here?

Sitting back in my favorite chair watching 60 Minutes, a staple of every Sunday evening in our home, I watched a disturbing interview with the ex-NBA referee brought down for betting on NBA games while officiating.
Gambling. A sickness. I get it.
What disgusted me even more was the behind the scenes glimpse at officiating in the NBA. Granted, I don’t know how much credence to give a ‘rogue referee’ whose ‘poor choices’ got him ex-communicated, but it did make me think about the calls seemingly missed by the officials and how ‘certain’ superstars earn the teflon treatment while others regardless of their length of time in the league do not?
As a long-time fan of the game, I enjoy watching a series where the underdog manages to beat ‘Goliath’ instead of watching a series unnecessarily extended so the big market teams could advance and the NBA could make more money. Why not script every game? Wouldn’t that produce the desired results?
What if you and a group of your co-workers collaborated to teach a customer a lesson because you didn’t like how they spoke to you? Now I am not defending bad manners because no one should ever be disrespected for performing their job. On the other hand, I suppose it’s really hard to be polite when speaking to a ref who watches you get hacked up and down the court and does nothing about it. How can you enjoy the game when personal fouls become personal vendettas?
It’s a good thing corporate America doesn’t play by the same rules as the NBA or do they?

As a classically trained music student, I use to wonder why anyone would need to play by ear when there’s sheet music? Don’t know how that got instilled in me, maybe my piano teacher told me that so I would continue taking piano lessons, huh? Maybe that kind of thinking may hold water if you’re always going to play classical music where every note is spelled out for you. I quickly found out the value of playing by ear years later when my husband volunteered me to be the interim choir director at the church we were attending.
Admittedly, I was a little nervous at first because I hadn’t played for many years since my last piano lesson. When I graduated from what was then known as the High School of Music and Art in New York City, I never thought I would ever play the piano again except for my own entertainment or if we had guests over. It’s like riding a bike , right? Sure, at least I thought so.
Then the aha moment came. I asked for copies of the sheet music so I could learn the songs and I was handed an audio tape. What’s this, I asked? These are some of the songs the choir sings. Great, but where’s the music? It’s on the tape I just gave you. Some of our songs are not on the tape so if you need, you can ask Lily to sing some of the songs for you and you can just pick it up, right? Um. Right.
It was at that moment I was going through my mental rolodex trying to remember who it was who told me it was totally unnecessary to play by ear so I could call them up and give them a piece of my mind.
What to do, what to do? To make matters worse, my husband had done such a great job of selling the church leaders on my ability to play based upon his recollection of my performances at piano recitals and having sat through hours upon hours that I devoted to practicing year earlier.
To make a long story short, I sucked it up and learned to play by ear since 95% of the music performed by the choir I was volunteered to lead was not available on sheet music. It was ‘nightmarish’ at first and got easier with time and lots more practice, but it sure would have been a lot easier if I hadn’t been so snooty and learned to play by ear earlier on.
I stumbled upon this site that shows you how you can learn to play by ear while sitting at your computer utilizing a method very similar to how I taught myself how to play by ear. Check it out.
